Norman Lindsay, 'Bacchanalian', The Bulletin, 7 December 1901

This drawing introduced the Bulletin's 1901 Christmas edition and conveys some idea of the bohemian enthusiasm for drinking, drugs, escapism and fantasy. Bohemia — An invention of the nineteenth century; a place to escape from the dull weariness of conventional living; a reserve for artists and writers; a private world reserved for the wild, free, unconventional and young.
